Updates in this email:
The 2024 Personal Finance Guidance draft is now open for public feedback.
Minnesota’s Personal Finance Working Group (PFWG) has been meeting regularly since June and has made important progress towards developing guidance to support the implementation of the personal finance graduation requirement statewide.
The PFWG has put their guidance recommendations together, and the draft of the guidance is now available for public review and feedback starting on September 9, 2024, and closing on September 23, 2024. The finalized plan will be available later this fall.
How to Provide Feedback on the Guidance
- Review the 2024 Personal Finance Guidance draft.
- Share your thoughts: We encourage you to share your thoughts, suggestions and concerns through the online feedback survey.
- Help us Spread the Word: Help us reach more stakeholders by sharing this information with your colleagues, friends, and community members. The more voices we hear, the stronger and more inclusive our guidance will be.
The Minnesota Department of Education Division of Special Education has begun its annual Community Listening sessions. The goal of the sessions is to gather feedback from community members about what is and is not working well for our children and students with disabilities.
As was done last year, all sessions will be virtual and two sessions, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, will be held for each topic. Below is a list of the remaining sessions that will be held including a link to register for the sessions. MDE’s Division of Special Education would appreciate it if you would share this message with families of students with disabilities and community members through newsletters, posters or social media. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Kirsten Rewey.

To support local high schools with their college application and financial aid efforts, the Ready, Set, FAFSA series will again be offered to students and families this fall. Running Tuesday evenings October 1-22, four Zoom sessions will cover the college application process, general financial aid information, details on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Minnesota Dream Act for undocumented students, and other ways to pay for college. All sessions will have simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, Somali, and Hmong. Financial aid experts from local colleges will be available during the events to conduct the Q and A in the chat. Students who attend are eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship.
Registration is open now for families. A promotional toolkit is available to schools with newsletter content and graphics. Please contact Beth Barsness for further information.
MDE, in collaboration with the College Board and the Minnesota AP Advisory Council, is hosting a full-day summit to advance equity in the Advanced Placement program: how schools/districts can use data to inform their decisions about which AP courses to offer, and how to create equitable access to AP courses for all students. Participants will attend breakout sessions on different topics and share ideas with other schools via presentations, a panel, and networking. Districts are encouraged to bring a team, if possible. Intended audience includes superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of curriculum/teaching and learning, principals, assistant principals, school counselors, AP coordinators or AP teachers.

The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) will be administered between January and June 2025. School districts that participate are obligated to notify families of the upcoming survey administration under the Protection of Pupils Rights Amendment (PPRA). There are two steps you must follow:
- Notification of your district’s planned participation in the 2025 MSS must be included in your district’s annual PPRA notification.
- Prior to administration of the MSS, you must distribute a more comprehensive notification letter to parents and guardians. Sample letters will be provided no later than November 2024.
Additional information about the MSS will be coming this fall. If you have immediate questions, please contact MDE.StudentSurvey@state.mn.us.
The new Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families offers a variety of grant opportunities for early learning providers, child care providers, Tribal Nations and others. Minnesota continues to see an increase of measles cases, primarily in unvaccinated children ages 2-10 years old. There have been 40 confirmed cases of measles in Minnesota in 2024 related to the current outbreak, with roughly one third of cases being hospitalized. Any unvaccinated people who are exposed to measles need to remain out of school and other high-risk activities for up to 21 days to prevent further cases of measles. Because measles spreads easily through the air, even before people may have symptoms, a single case of measles at a school can, and has, led to the entire school being exposed.
Here are several steps you can take to learn more about measles and prepare for a measles case in your school: review and refer to Preparing for and Responding to Measles in Your School.
Districts and charter schools offering concurrent enrollment courses in partnership with eligible institutions during the 2024-25 school year are eligible for aid reimbursements per student per course.
For more information, read the September 3, 2024, memorandum from the Career and College Success Division or email mde.postsecondary@state.mn.us. Visit the MDE Calendar for Concurrent Enrollment Aid Overview session information.
