Annual Public Notice for Child Nutrition Programs

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is distributing a public notice, including current income eligibility guidelines, to media on behalf of schools, childcare centers, family childcare sponsoring organizations, adult care centers and other organizations that participate in these U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs:

  • National School Lunch Program
  • School Breakfast Program
  • Child and Adult Care Food Program

Federal regulations for these programs require the notice to be provided to local media so that, when possible, it may be printed as a public service to readers.

Minnesota Great Apple Crunch

The Minnesota Great Apple Crunch is back again. The official crunch date is Thursday, October 10, at noon, but crunches can be hosted anytime during October. Register for the Minnesota Great Apple Crunch and request free crunch stickers for your students.

October is Farm to School and Early Care Month

October is the perfect month to serve delicious local foods and celebrate the harvest season with community farmers and producers. Suggested weekly themes are below:

October 1-4: Local Meals for Local Kids
Fill your plates and trays with Minnesota (MN) grown foods.

October 7-11: Local to the Core
Crunch into MN’s state fruit: the apple.

October 14-18: Grow Your Roots, Know Your Roots
Dig into agriculture, in the classroom or the garden.

October 21-25: Meet Your MN Farmers
Connect with the local farmers who grow your food.

October 28-31: Cultural Connections
Explore different cultural foods and dishes.

Race and Ethnicity Data Guidance Memo

USDA released a guidance memo regarding collection of race and ethnicity data of program participants in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). As a reminder, using visual identification is no longer an allowable practice. This memo includes questions and answers in addition to a list of best practices regarding this data collection. For more information, please read Questions and Answers Related to CACFP 11-2021, SFSP 07-2021 Collection of Race and Ethnicity Data by Visual Observation and Identification in the CACFP and SFSP – Policy Rescission – Set 2.

Updated Resources From USDA

The following resources have been revised to reflect the changes with the Final Rule, Child Nutrition Programs: Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

  • Crediting in the Child Nutrition Programs Tip Sheet series. The revised versions introduce the menu-planning flexibilities beginning July 1, 2024, and changes that will be implemented in the coming school years in a quick-reference format.   • Serving School Meals to Preschoolers training worksheet. This four-page worksheet assists National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program operators in planning menus that meet the preschool meal pattern. View the Serving School Meals to Preschoolers worksheet.

School Nutrition Programs (SNP)

Annual Training Hours Revised

USDA provides state agencies the discretion to determine the number of hours of required annual training for some positions. The number of required annual training hours for substitutes, student workers and volunteers has been revised. Substitutes and student workers in paid part time positions must complete four annual hours of training. Volunteers and student workers in unpaid positions must complete annual civil rights training and should receive other training related to their assigned duties. Fund 02 Revenue Recognition When Operating the CACFP Serving Childcare Centers

For SNP Sponsors participating in CACFP for Childcare Centers, the full cost of the CACFP meals must be received as revenue in Fund 02.

  • The claim for CACFP meal reimbursement is based on household income eligibility with each level of eligibility receiving different rates of reimbursement.
  • To determine the amount in addition to the reimbursement that must accrue to Fund 02, the following process can be used:

Step 1: Determine the full cost of each meal type.

Step 2: Determine the total reimbursement received per meal type using the claim summary in The Cyber-Linked Interactive Child Nutrition System (CLiCS).

Step 3: Using the total number of meals, multiply by the agreed upon price.

Step 4: Find the difference between the required revenue and the reimbursement received. This amount is the amount due to Fund 02 from the Childcare Program.

Important: The source of revenue is up to the administrator of the program receiving the meals and cannot come from Fund 02.
