The start of a new school year also signals the time to join or renew membership in Minnesota's professional teacher organization for business teachers – MBITE (Minnesota Marketing, Business, and Information Technology Educators). Annual membership is just $25 from July 1 to August 31, then increases to $30 starting on September 1. Membership registration information can be found on the MBITE website.
Why join MBITE? The organization operates based on Four Pillars:
-
Networking: Providing opportunities for MBITE members to meet and discuss curriculum and instruction
-
Legislative Advocacy: Representation on MnACTE provides MBITE members a voice in legislative action relating to education legislation.
-
Resource/Lesson Sharing: MBITE members are given access to the curriculum database via Google Drive.
-
Professional Development: MBITE will provide and support opportunities to members through conferences, workshops, tours, webinars, etc.
This year's MBITE Fall Conference will take place on Friday, October 4, and again will be held at the Bethel University Anderson Center. Conference strands will be offered in several areas, including personal finance and artificial intelligence.

Program Approval renewal applications are being developed this summer and fall by CTE Business teachers with programs in school districts who are members of the following Perkins Consortia: Dakota County; Minnesota West; South Central; and South Metro.
A key purpose of MDE's review of Program Approval applications is to verify the alignment of CTE courses to high-quality outcomes such as the Minnesota Business Frameworks. Legislation passed in May 2023 (Minnesota Statutes 2023, section 120B.022, subdivision 1) now specifies that school districts "...must establish and regularly review [their own] standards for career and technical education (CTE) programs. Standards must align with CTE frameworks developed by the Department of Education, standards developed by national CTE organizations, or recognized industry standards."
MDE Program Specialists seek evidence of this curriculum alignment and CTE program design elements in submitted course syllabi. It can also be submitted in other course/curriculum documents (i.e., curriculum maps, unit guides, etc.). Key evidence elements include:
- Alignment of instructional units to performance indicators and benchmarks in Minnesota Business Frameworks or national standards
- Course content outline
- Evidence of embedded student leadership development and career pathway development
For assistance with developing materials for your Program Approval renewal application, contact MDE Business and Marketing Specialist Dean Breuer.
The Personal Finance Working Group has been busy during the summer months, working in large and small groups to develop guidance for delivery of Personal Finance courses beginning in the 2025-26 school year to meet the new graduation requirement for Personal Finance.
The expected timeline will result in a completed draft released for public comment in early September. The public comments received will be reviewed and considered for any needed revisions to the draft, with final approval from the commissioner of education and released to school districts and the general public anticipated in November.
Any questions about this work can be directed to the Personal Finance mailbox.

The Career and Technical Educaton Teacher Induction Program (CTE TIP) is a grant-funded CTE mentoring program, combining in-person support with curriculum and professional development to support early-career teachers during their first years in the profession. On average, 97% of teachers who participate in the program return to teach the following year and more than 90% of participants were still teaching two years later.
The objectives of CTE TIP are to:
- provide monthly professional development,
- provide teaching, program, and curricular resources,
- provide mentoring and coaching,
- facilitate programming to address early career teacher challenges,
- provide CTE-focused pedagogical resources and support,
- provide an opportunity to analyze and reflect upon teaching, and
- build teacher efficacy, resilience, and influence job satisfaction and teacher retention.
Participation provides just-in-time monthly professional development, mentorship, and a cohort of support. Space is limited for this program so encourage new CTE teachers you know to apply now for CTE TIP! Priority will be given to teachers with Tier 1, Tier 2, and Out-of-Field Permission (OFP) licenses.
