Welcome to the Minnesota READ Act Newsletter


The goal of the Minnesota READ Act is to have every child reading at or above grade level every year, beginning in kindergarten, and to support multilingual learners and students receiving special education services in achieving their individualized reading goals.

Minnesota READ Act Professional Development Registration Requests Advances to Step 2

Minnesota districts and charter schools are starting to select their professional development vendor for training on evidence-based reading instruction through Step 2 of the professional development registration process.

Registration for READ Act literacy professional development will be done through MDE and paid for through READ Act funds.

Registration for Phase 1 educators* is open until October 1, 2024. Districts and charter schools are required to provide access to professional development for Phase 1 educators by July 1, 2024. Notifying Phase 1 staff of the scheduled professional development qualifies as providing access.

Minnesota READ Act Celebrates Books

Are you looking for something good to read? The Minnesota READ Act celebrates everything reading! On January 22, the American Library Association (ALA) announced 22 separate awards for books and media this year, including the Coretta Scott King Author Award winner Nigeria Jones by Ibi Zoboi, and published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

About the Minnesota READ Act

Minnesota Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act, known as the READ Act, was passed and signed into law by Governor Tim Walz on May 24, 2023. The goal of this legislation is to have every Minnesota child reading at or above grade level every year, beginning in kindergarten, and to support multilingual learner and students receiving special education services in achieving their individualized reading goals. The READ Act replaces Read Well by Third Grade (RWBTG) and is in effect as of July 1, 2023.
