Updated Requirements for American Sign Language Interpreters in Schools

Minnesota Statutes 2022, section 122A.31, subdivision 1, American Sign Language/ English Interpreters has been amended to read that American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters qualified to work in educational settings will now include:

  • Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI) with a certificate from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Deaf interpreters who have completed 40 hours of RID-approved continuing education units (CEUs).

A Deaf interpreter with 40 hours of RID-approved CEUs would be eligible for a two-year provisional certificate.
