Gender-Inclusive School Learning Cohort

MDE’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Center is excited to announce the launch of their Gender-Inclusive School Learning Cohort for the upcoming 2023-24 school year.  Gender-inclusive schools increase academic achievement, school connectedness and safety for all students. Participants will receive professional development, technical assistance, and implementation and policy support.  By participating in this program, your school district will have the opportunity to join school leaders from across the state in ensuring that every student feels valued, supported and empowered to achieve their full potential. Learn more about the Gender-Inclusive School Learning Cohort.

If you are interested in participating, please RSVP for the 2023-2024 Gender Identity Learning Cohort.

If you have any questions, please contact Jason Bucklin, LGBTQ Education Specialist. We look forward to the chance to collaborate with your district.

The Division of School Finance has published an update on many of the funding areas that came out of the 2023 legislative session. Some funding areas are still under review and timelines for updates have been included. Links to FAQ and memos are also included. School business officials can expect to receive a new School Business Bulletin in early September with more details on Uniform Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards (UFARS) coding and segment descriptions. School Finance remains committed to providing information and updates and we encourage leaders to watch for email notifications as well as regularly checking the legislative resource webpage at MDE.

If you have questions or need clarification, please email mde.funding@state.mn.us. Please put the funding area in the subject line to help direct it to the right team.

Reminder: New Teacher Resource: Supporting African American Children’s Transition to Kindergarten

Individuals representative of Minnesota’s African American urban community worked together to identify the ecosystem supporting the success of African American children in Minnesota. The group worked together to develop a comprehensive resource for educators and administrators in early learning settings to use before and during kindergarten entry. This ecosystem resource helps us to be ready to support the experience of the urban African American child in Minnesota and create joyful classroom environments that celebrate all.

Or, find the full document, as well as individual sections at the bottom of the Kindergarten Transitions page.

Reminder: Consolidated State Performance Report (CSPR) Federal Data Collection

Each year, MDE reports performance data to the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Some of the data requested is not currently available to MDE via established data collection systems. Therefore, beginning the week of August 21, 2023, program representatives listed in MDE-ORG will receive a link via email to the annually-required data collection survey for the following programs:

  • McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Data – All districts and charters receiving Title I, Part A funding must complete the survey
  • Title I, Part D Neglected and Delinquent Student Data – All districts and charters receiving Title I, Part D funding must complete the survey
  • Title III Language Instruction for English Learners and Immigrants Program Data – All districts and charters receiving Title III funding must complete the survey including Title III consortium fiscal hosts as well as consortium members

In the event that no program representative can be collected from MDE-ORG, the link will be sent to superintendents or charter school directors. The link will be unique to your district or charter school. The link may be forwarded to another person within the district or charter school to complete the survey. The survey will save the data if you are unable to complete it all at once. The deadline to complete the survey is September 29.

If you have questions, please contact MDE.ESEA@state.mn.us . Training for each data collection will be provided. Check the MDE Calendar for details.

Reminder: Indigenous Education for All Needs Assessment By September 22

Indigenous Education for All (IEFA) is new legislation that will educate all students in Minnesota about the 11 Tribal Nations with whom we have geography in common. MDE is gathering feedback from students, (including former students), parents, educators, community leaders (including elders) and residents of Minnesota. The Indigenous Education for All Needs Assessment Survey will be open until September 22.

Information gathered from this survey will inform the legislature and MDE about your needs to implement Indigenous Education for All. We would also like to hear how we can support the work to implement Indigenous Education for All to better serve each student in Minnesota schools.

If you have any questions regarding this survey or Indigenous Education for All, please contact Indigenous.Education.For.All.MDE@state.mn.us.
