New Special Education Social Work Services and Medicaid Billing Statute: Effective Date Clarification

The recently adopted Minnesota Statute regarding Medicaid reimbursement for school social work services is set to be effective January 1, 2024, or upon federal approval, whichever is later. This means that the legislation may not go into effect until 2024, or even after 2024, depending on whether and when federal approval happens.

If you would like to review the changes recently adopted, please see the amended Minnesota Statues, section 256B.0625, subd. 26.

If there are questions related to Medicaid reimbursements for school health and behavioral health services, contact Julie Neururer, Minnesota Department of Education Interagency Services specialist, or Jenny Roth, Minnesota Department of Human Services Individualized Education Program Services coordinator.

The Minnesota Department of Education's (MDE) Special Education Division works toward its vision that all children get necessary support for healthy development and lifelong learning; its mission is to provide leadership to ensure a high-quality education for Minnesota's children and youth with disabilities.
