Program Approval Renewal Trainings

Check mark in box

Teachers and Perkins Consortia Leaders in six consortia around the state have received email reminders that their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are due for five-year renewals this fall. This impacts all CTE programs for schools in the following Perkins consortia:

  • Great River
  • Mid-Minnesota
  • Northeast Metro
  • Oak Land
  • Pine Technical
  • St. Paul

Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has scheduled a set of webinars to guide CTE teachers and administrators through the application/renewal process. (NOTE: The process and the form are NOT the same as five years ago!) Those CTE teachers and administrators who will be involved in completing and submitting application materials to renew Business and Marketing programs are highly encouraged to attend BOTH of these sessions:

"Part 1" Webinar Session – Preparing Your Secondary CTE Program Approval Application. Thursday, April 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. Pre-registration for Part 1 is required to obtain the webinar link.

  • This session will provide information needed by ALL CTE teachers and administrators – CTE teachers from ALL CAREER FIELDS should attend this session. It will cover the approximately 60% of the application that is “common” to teachers in all CTE program areas.
  • Session will be recorded for those who cannot attend the live presentation.
  • Attending live or watching the recording is a required prerequisite to attending the "Part 2" training specific to our business/marketing program area!

"Part 2" Webinar Session – Completing Your Business/Marketing Program Approval Application. Wednesday, April 26 (offered twice – choose one), 7:30-8:30 a.m. or 3:30-4:30 p.m.

  • This session will provide information on the 40% of the application specific to approval of Business and Marketing programs – information from the Part 1 training will not be repeated.
  • All Business/Marketing teachers in the consortia listed above are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to attend live one of the two “Part 2” webinar sessions offered.
  • The session will be recorded for those who cannot attend live. Interested administrators can also be encouraged to attend this session.

Resources to assist in the completion of your Program Approval renewal application have been sent via email to Business teachers in the affected consortia. If you did not receive these resources and your program is due for renewal in 2023-2024, contact Dean Breuer to receive these materials.

Continuous Improvement

The year in which your CTE Program Approval is renewed is only one year in an intended five-year process of program alignment and continuous improvement. Work done and improvements made during this five-year timeline can lessen the amount of work needed when the time arrives to renew your program with MDE.

CTE Business and Marketing Specialist Dean Breuer has developed a template calendar and training materials to assist Business and Marketing teachers in your consortium on aligning and strengthening your programs prior to developing your Program Approval renewal applications. If you are interested in getting a "jump start" on this work – to lighten the load when it comes time to submit your Program Approval renewals – connect with teachers and consortia leaders in your region and express interest in scheduling training for Fall 2023.

Contact Dean Breuer for additional information or to schedule a regional continuous improvement training session.

Minnesota Business Venture Summer Camp

Registration is open for students to attend Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) at the University of St. Thomas in July. Business and Marketing students can participate in the camp during one of two weeks: July 9-14, or July 22-27.

MBV is a summer camp program where students learn about themselves, carer options they may never have heard of, practice teamwork and public speaking, and meet peers and business leaders from around the state. It is a unique opportunity to live on a college campus, network with entrepreneurs and business professionals, learn the basics of building a business, and hear from amazing speakers.

Students who apply early will save $100. Early bird registration is due by Friday, April 21. Share this promotional video with your students, as well as this link for MBV registration.

There are two ways that Business teachers (and their advisory committee members!) can get involved with MBV!

  • Mock Interviews: Sit down with high school students and conduct brief interviews, then directly deliver feedback to help them improve. BestPrep will provide the questions, score sheets, and training. Interviews will be held on Tuesday, July 11, and Monday, July 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Volunteer for either or both dates.)
  • Business Plan Judges: Students at MBV spend the week creating business plans in teams for a hypothetical product or service. Each team presents their marketing, operations, and financial plan to a panel of volunteer judges, who provide feedback (think "Shark Tank!"). Training and a scoring rubric are provided. Business plan presentations take place on Thursday, July 13, and Wednesday, July 26, from 12 to 4 p.m. (Volunteer for either or both dates.)

Sign up to be a Mock Interviewer or a Business Plan Judge.

Financial Literacy Month Resources

April is Financial Literacy Month! Educational partners at EVERFI have resources to engage your students in learning more about personal finance:

Accounting Website Change

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) website "StartHereGoPlaces (SHGP)" has now transitioned to combine with the "ThisWayToCPA (TWTCPA)" website. Key things to know about this transition include:

  • Those who have created educator accounts on SHGP will be able to login on TWTCPA – their account will simply redirect to the new site. (You will be asked to update your password.)
  • All Classroom Activities have been moved from SHGP to the Academic Resource Database on TWTCPA. Resources are searchable by type, topic, level, and technology skill. The new combined database will provide educators with over 400 curated resources.
  • AICPA high school student membership was officially rolled out last month and both high school and university students can now use TWTCPA to sign up for AICPA's free student membership.

Summer Technology Integration Workshop

BestPrep's Technology Integration Workshop is designed to energize educators as they head into the new school year. During the workshop, K-12 educators attend lively breakout sessions on timely topics, hear from a student panel, and are paired with a business partner for a job shadow. Every attendee is supported as they update a unit plan of their choice.

The Technology Integration Workshop will be held Monday, July 31, to Wednesday, August 2, in Wayzata. Registration information for BestPrep's Technology Integration Workshop is now available.
