Register for Virtual Skills Sessions: Anishinaabe and Oneida Values

Register now for Restorative Practices in Schools and Communities for Exploring Anishinaabe and Oneida Values, a three morning, nine-hour total restorative skills session that will take place on Jan. 14, 21 and 28 from 9 a.m.–noon online. Fee: $135.

Dr. Dan Ninham is Wolf Clan from the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin and a 37-year middle school physical education teacher. Susan Ninham is a member of the Red Lake Nation and life-long teacher and learner of the Ojibwe language (as well as a school administrator). Together, they will share the stories and values of their culture, to help deepen participants’ understanding of the world view that informs, supports and nurtures restorative and circle practice.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs), including CEUs for administrators, will be available. Reminder: Applications for Come Teach in Minnesota are Open

Applications for Come Teach in Minnesota, a program aiming to attract teachers of color and American Indian teachers to Minnesota public schools, are open and due on Dec. 21

Come Teach in Minnesota provides funding for districts, charter schools, intermediate districts and education cooperatives that employ classroom teachers to offer hiring and retention bonuses for licensed teachers who are American Indian or teachers of color to move to and teach in Minnesota. Reminder: Register for First Steps: An Introduction to Restorative Principles – Jan. 14, 21 and 28

Register now for Restorative Practices in Schools and Communities – First Steps: An Introduction to Restorative Principles. These virtual sessions will take place on three Saturday mornings in Jan. from 9 a.m.–noon.

First Steps is one of seven restorative skills sessions offered by the Minnesota Department of Education Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Division. Invite your student support staff, teachers, fellow administrators, educational assistants, school board members, family members—anyone interested in ways to build community in schools and repair relationships. These sessions will be useful for people planning to attend circle or repairing relationships trainings in person in June or August or the online Circle Trainings this February.

Reminder: Next Generation Nursing Assistant High School CNA Equipment Grant

A new grant is available from Minnesota State to support nursing assistant training in high schools. School districts with approved nursing assistant programs can apply for an equipment grant of up to $5,000. The deadline for applying is Dec. 16. Application materials can be found on the Office of Higher Education’s website at Certified Nursing Assistant Training.

Reminder: Language Access Network 2022–23

The Language Access Network (LAN) is a statewide community of practice centered on ensuring that families who speak languages other than English have access to information and services from public schools. LAN consists of school and school district personnel with responsibility for the interpreting, translation and language access needs of Minnesota’s multilingual children and families.

At this time, we have the following dates set for the Language Access Network (you will receive calendar invitations upon registration).

  • Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023; 2–3:30 p.m. (virtual connection with MDE)
  • Thursday, March 16, 2023; 2–3:30 p.m. (virtual connection with MDE)
