Parents and families can now choose to extend strong protection to our littlest Minnesotans. Federal health officials now recommend COVID-19 vaccines for all children 6 months and older. Like with vaccines for older age groups, the vaccines for young children were found to be safe, and these vaccines should be effective at preventing severe disease and death. The known risks and possible severe complications of COVID-19 outweigh the potential risks of having a rare, adverse reaction to vaccination.
COVID-19 Vaccines Now Recommended for Children 6 months to 5 years old
Two vaccines have been authorized for this age group:
-
The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years old is a three-dose series. The second dose is at least three weeks later; the third dose is at least eight weeks after that.
-
The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 5 years old is a two-dose series. The second dose is at least four weeks later.
It is critical to get all recommended doses for maximum protection.
