School-Based Community Services (SBCS) Training Opportunity

Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) is in the process of developing trainings for this fall for school districts to learn more about School-Based Community Services (SBCS). SBCS can provide MCHP reimbursement for certain medically necessary services when:

  • provided to MHCP-eligible children;
  • by a qualified health care provider employed or contracted by a Minnesota public school;
  • that is enrolled with MHCP to provide Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) services.

SBCS can cover health-related services that students are not receiving through their IEP or IFSP.

If you are interested in finding out more about how your school may be reimbursed for SBCS for children that do not qualify for special education services, review the School-Based Community Services section of the MHCP Provider Manual and complete the MHCP SBCS survey by July 8, 2022, to tell us your specific training needs. We will incorporate questions from the survey into our training agenda.

SBCS training learning objectives include:

  • An overview of SBCS.
  • What you have to do as a school in order to provide SBCS.
  • Flowcharts with step-by-step instructions on meeting the eligibility requirements.
  • What services are covered and not covered under SBCS.

We will also review MHCP service-specific manual pages for each covered SBCS to identify and explain:

  • Provider requirements.
  • Coverage criteria.
  • Covered and noncovered services.
  • Telehealth.
  • Billing, coding and benefit limitations.

We will announce the dates, times and registration information for the SBCS fall training in a future message.
