January 2022
2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) Opening Date
The 2022 MSS will open on Tuesday, January 18 and remain open until Friday, June 10. District Assessment Coordinators (or other identified staff) received an email on December 1, 2021, with registration information. While schools can register at any point, we encourage early registration so schools have the most time to prepare. If you need additional help with registration, please contact mss@wilder.org.
Changes to the Level 3 (High School) Survey
The following changes were made to the level 3 (high school) version of the survey last week. No items were added; some were deleted. If you have already shared the previous level 3 version with families, you do not need to resend the new version.
- The level 3 MSS will not include alternate versions of the survey, as previously communicated. All students will answer the same questions.
- Ten items from the alternate versions will be moved to the core version of the survey. Overall, the 2022 level 3 survey will be the same length as the 2019 level 3 survey.
The new version will be posted on the 2022 MSS website by the end of this week. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
PPRA Reminder
It is the school’s responsibility to ensure compliance with the Protection of Pupils Rights Amendment (PPRA) if participating in the MSS. For more information, please visit the MSS – PPRA site.
Parent/guardian notification letter templates are available on the MSS website in English, Hmong, Somali and Spanish.
If parents/guardians would like to review the instrument, you may direct them to the appropriate link on the 2022 MSS website. The links will be available by the end of this week. We recommend only providing the links upon request.
Why is the MSS Important?
Please download and share this MSS infographic; it includes helpful information about what the MSS is and how you can use it in your community.
2022 MSS Survey Administration Tip Sheets
Please visit the MSS website for tip sheets on:
Online Schools and Online Learners
Schools that have students enrolled in online courses will receive two sets of links: one for online students and another for in-person students. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) recommends that a student taking more than half of their courses online should complete the online MSS version.
If a student is quarantined during the time of administration:
- District and schools can decide if students should take the MSS from home or when they are back in schools.
- They may take the survey at home if there is a survey administrator online that can read the script to them.
- It is recommended that they take the in-person version of the survey.
- More tips can be found on our MSS – support page (http://mnstudentsurvey.org/training).
If there are any questions related to online MSS for virtual students, please contact mde.studentsurvey@state.mn.us.
