Training Opportunity for Educators: Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is announcing the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training opportunity for Minnesota licensed educators. This opportunity is funded by a grant that is named in Laws of Minnesota 2021, 1st Spec. Sess. Chapter 13, article 3, section 7. The LETRS training supports the following priorities in Minnesota’s Due North Education Plan:

  • Meet the needs of students during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Every student receives a world-class education.
  • Every student learns in a classroom with caring and qualified teachers,

Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and leaders in the field of literacy, LETRS teaches the skills needed to master the foundations and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and written language.

LETRS further develops educators’ language and literacy expertise in understanding why reading is complex, the source of reading difficulties, and how to successfully teach all students, including those with significant and persistent literacy-related needs. The information in each LETRS unit allows teachers to more easily discern effective versus ineffective literacy practices. It provides a depth of understanding that empowers teachers to feel confident in accelerating literacy outcomes.

The LETRS training opportunity is open to licensed Minnesota educators who hold the following positions:

  • Kindergarten - grade 3 classroom teachers
  • Elementary reading specialists and intervention teachers
  • Elementary literacy coaches
  • Elementary special educators responsible for reading instruction
  • Literacy and language professors in Minnesota institutes of higher education
  • Administrators

Registration opens today, December 15, 2021 and will remain open until all seats are filled. Teacher participation is voluntary and space is limited. Please register as soon as possible to reserve a seat. We will generate cohorts on an ongoing basis as participants register. The first cohort begins in mid-January 2022. Enrollment for additional cohorts will remain open until all allocated LETRS grant funds are expended.
