Overview of P-EBT Success in the 2020-21 School Year

Thank you for all of the hard work you did last school year to ensure students who missed meals due to COVID-19 were able to receive funds to purchase food. Over 491,000 children in Minnesota received over $439,000,000 in P-EBT benefits last school year. Changes to P-EBT for 2021-22

There are several important changes to P-EBT in the 2021-22 school year. Plan on attending the P-EBT data portal training to receive the complete updates. Begin thinking about how the following new data points will be collected:

  • COVID-19 Impact: This is a new term used in the P-EBT program for the 2021-22 school year. A school that participates in the National School Lunch Program or Seamless Summer Option must be closed or operating at reduced attendance or hours for at least five consecutive instructional days during the 2021-22 school year for students at the school to be eligible for P-EBT benefits.
    • Once a school meets the five consecutive instructional day threshold during the 2021-22 school year, students eligible for free or reduced-price meals may receive P-EBT benefits for the days they do not attend school in person and do not have access to a meal service at the school due to a COVID-19 impact, including the initial five days.
    • There are several nuances that will be discussed during the webinar.
  • Student Start Date of Eligibility: Student eligibility for P-EBT is dependent on the submission date of an Application for Educational Benefits. Additional information will be shared during the webinar. Start thinking about how your school can gather this information:
    • Please make sure you are date stamping Applications for Educational Benefits as they are turned in.
    • If Applications for Educational Benefits are not date stamped, the date of free or reduced-price meal approval should be used.
    • Students are not eligible for P-EBT benefits that occurred before they submitted their Application for Educational Benefits and were approved for free or reduced-price meals.
    • For directly certified students, the date the student is included on the direct certification report is the date of eligibility. The report date is included at the bottom of each monthly direct certification report.
