Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

CACFP Waiver Request 

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is submitting a request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a new CACFP waiver. If approved, this waiver would allow Minnesota family child care providers who operate in a place other than where they reside, and are licensed as a special family day care home, to participate in CACFP as a day care home. Updates on this request will be provided in a future bulletin. 

Monthly Webinar Series 

Join Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) staff for upcoming trainings. Topics are based on common findings during administrative reviews. School Nutrition Programs (SNP)

Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Deadlines Waiver 

USDA recently released a nationwide waiver extending the upcoming CEP deadlines for school food authorities (SFAs) operating the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. This includes extending the CEP application deadline from June 30, 2021, to September 30, 2021. The waiver also allows flexibility for the data used to calculate the Identified Student Percentage (ISP). To learn more, please review the Nationwide Waiver of CEP Deadlines in the NSLP and SBP.

Opportunities from Our Partners

Participate in the Food Service Week of Action 

On Tuesday, April 6, Food Service Week of Action will be launched to share how important our food service industry is in Minnesota. The goal is to drive vaccine participation and connect food service employees with the resources they need to sign up for a vaccine. Help your employees sign up for Minnesota's Vaccine Connector. The connector will prioritize food service workers during the Food Service Week of Action. 

Resources and Opportunities from the Institute for Child Nutrition 

The Institute for Child Nutrition (ICN) recently announced new and updated resources and opportunities for child nutrition professionals. New resources include:  

  • The Culinary Institute of Child Nutrition (CICN), whose principal mission is to increase the culinary skills of school nutrition professionals to equip them to transition their programs from a “heat and serve" model to a scratch-based (or quick scratch) production model. 
  • The popular Mealtime Memo, which has a brand new look and features informative and fun new components. 
  • The eLearning Portal, which currently offers 88 online courses and has added two new courses, including Food Allergies: Avoiding Cross Contact and Whole Grain-Rich Foods – Part 1
  • The i-Bites Podcast series, which includes interviews with experts in the field of child nutrition. 

Vocational Culinary (VoCul) Training Led by The Good Acre 

Are you interested in joining the ranks of skilled culinary professionals working in area public school kitchens? If so, VoCul is for you! This program consists of: 

  • 10 weeks of training including a mix of online Zoom lectures, in-person cooking labs, and flexible remote work tasks 
  • An internship phase that includes 112 hours of on-the-job training in a partnering kitchen 

Participants receive a weekly stipend. The Good Acre’s next cohort will begin in July 2021. Space in this program is limited, and applications are due June 1. RSVP for the virtual VoCul open house on May 6 at 5 p.m.
