COVID-19 Saliva Testing for Staff: Program Guide for Schools

As schools plan to conduct COVID-19 saliva testing for all school staff, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has created a document to help guide site-level testing coordinators through the process.

This document includes an overview of the COVID-19 saliva screening testing program, information to help you set up testing, contact information and common troubleshooting solutions.

View the COVID-19 Saliva Testing for Staff: Program Guide for Schools. Please ensure this document is shared with all of your site-level testing coordinators.

If you have additional questions about the program, please contact COVIDTesting.MDE@state.mn.us

REGISTRATION FORM: Let Us Know How Many Tests Your School Building Needs

Each school building will need to complete a registration form to let MDE know how many saliva test kits are needed.

These kits will be delivered directly to your school building in time for your first test date. First test dates for schools in-person or hybrid learning by January 4 are listed below, by region. Following this schedule is critical to manage COVID-19 testing lab capacity. If you do not know which region you are in, please contact COVIDTesting.MDE@state.mn.us as soon as possible (you do not need to know your region in order to complete the registration form).

  • First testing date for each region. Testing will continue on a two-week rotation beginning on these dates:
    • Monday, January 4: Metro A (see Appendix A of the program guide for a breakdown of schools)
    • Tuesday, January 5: Sourcewell and Lakes Country
    • Wednesday, January 6: Southeast
    • Thursday, January 7: Resource Training & Solutions
    • Friday, January 8: Northwest
    • Monday, January 11: Metro B (see Appendix A of the program guide for a breakdown of schools)
    • Tuesday, January 12: Southwest
    • Wednesday, January 13: Northeast
    • Thursday, January 14: Southcentral
    • Friday, January 15: Nonpublic Schools

The registration form will ask you to indicate what date you will be starting or returning to in-person or hybrid learning, which will help us determine when to begin sending tests to your building. If you do not have your plan in place yet, please wait to complete the survey until you have your date solidified.

To help ensure the first shipment of tests are available by your designated testing date, schools testing between January 4 and January 8 should submit registrations by end of business December 24.

Site level coordinators: complete the registration form now.
