Apply for HillRAP Digital Reading Intervention Pilot
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) invites teachers of Special Education, Alternative Delivery of Supports and Instructional Services (ADSIS), and Title 1 programs delivering reading instruction to small groups of students (one to five) to participate in a year-long pilot program. There are spots for up to 24 teachers.
The pilot program will provide training and a digital application (HillRAP) that designs and supports structured reading lessons based on the Orton-Gillingham Methodology and science of reading. The digital application will allow teachers to individualize and deliver small group instruction. The application can be used in any of the service delivery models face-to-face, hybrid or, distance learning.
The goal of this project is to determine if schools can effectively and sustainably deliver systematic and explicit instruction using the science of reading and following an Orton-Gillingham-based reading instruction method that is effective and sustainable for small groups. The second goal of this project is to determine the usability of and success of this application in differentiating instruction for students within small groups while increasing the rate and growth of all students in the group.
The application deadline is September 8, 2020. View the application on the MDE website. For more information, contact Vicki Weinberg.
Vocational Rehabilitation Services Guide Updated
As we head into the 2020-21 school year, we would like to share with you the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services (OSERS) updated Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Transition Guide. VR celebrated 100 years of service last June. The resources in this guide will help ensure that students with disabilities, including those with the most significant disabilities and those potentially eligible for VR services, are presented with meaningful opportunities to prepare for the transition from school to a VR program in order to further maximize independence in their communities, self-sufficiency, and prepare for competitive integrated employment.

Test of Employability Social Skill Curriculum in Closed Custody Settings
The University of Oregon is recruiting correctional education (residential) schools to participate in testing the effectiveness of an employability social skill curriculum in closed custody settings. Currently facilities in Nevada, Utah, and Iowa, are implementing the clinical trial. The curriculum is aligned with Career Common Core Standards and can qualify as a Pre-Employment Transition Service for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The project can be implemented in facilities that are permitting group instruction, require masks and necessary personal protective equipment and maintain physical distancing guidelines. Data collection may take place in person or virtually.
Register for an informational meeting on the University of Oregon Zoom website. The meeting will be September 9, 2020, at 11 a.m. CDT and will define the logistics for participation, provide virtual training for teachers and data collectors, and begin implementation in late fall.
For more information, contact principal investigator Deanne Unruh or project coordinator Caroline MaGee.
