TRAINING

Working Through the Legal Framework of School Discipline

Dates: March 16, May 1, and May 7, 2020

Time out of school has huge implications for student achievement and future success. When done well, school discipline policies should have a positive impact on school climate, keep students engaged in learning, improve student achievement and graduation rates, and increase students’ chances for lifelong success.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has developed a training session that will help school administrators better understand Minnesota’s Pupil Fair Dismissal Act (PFDA) and federal laws that comprise the legal framework for addressing student conduct. Information will be presented on topics related to the use of disciplinary action in schools including due process protections for students, suspension procedures, expulsion and exclusion hearings, and a brief review of discipline data in Minnesota. The overview also includes alternative education service requirements, manifestation determinations, and 45-school-day placements as they relate to students with individualized education programs (IEPs). The presentation of information will be followed by an opportunity for administrators to apply the legal framework in structured case studies facilitated by MDE staff. Board of School Administrators (BOSA) credit will be available.

Please visit MDE’s calendar to register. Please register for only one date.
