How asthma friendly is your School?
Effective asthma management at school can help students with asthma stay healthy, learn better, and participate fully during their school day.
In K-12 schools, asthma is having a sizable impact on the lives of students and staff. Consider these facts:
- Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism due to chronic illness. Over 14 million school days are missed due to asthma each year.
- Asthma can affect a student's academic performance. It can disrupt sleep and the ability to concentrate. It can also cause a child to miss out on important social interactions and school activities.
- Asthma can be life threatening. An asthma episode can quickly escalate and may result in death if a student does not receive prompt medical attention.
The Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) Asthma Program wants to help by offering grants up to $1,500 for a variety of school-based projects. Choose a project that fits the needs of your school and student/staff population.
Consider developing partnerships with health care professionals in the community to organize and hold an asthma event, or an asthma data project involving the school health office's data management, or enhance communication and collaboration between schools, clinics, hospitals, and public health.
Come up with an idea, choose a project and key partners, and submit the Asthma Mini-Grant application online. It is that easy!
MDH asthma program staff are available to answer questions and direct you to online school resources to support your project or Build Your Own Asthma Project!
