PRESS RELEASE

Lights On Afterschool Day Recognizes Importance of Learning Outside of the Classroom

Roseville, MN- Today, October 26, is the 18th annual Lights on Afterschool Day, a national celebration of the role afterschool programs play in the lives of youth, families and communities.

Many afterschool programs are funded by the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers program, which recently awarded $7 million in grants to Minnesota schools and organizations. Fourteen grant recipients were selected from 55 applications using a peer review process, with priority given to programs that serve students attending underperforming schools. The initial grant is for a three-year period of September 1, 2017 through August 31, 2020, subject to availability of funds from the United States Department of Education and contingent on satisfactory annual performance of the grantee. This round of awardees joins 13 programs in Minnesota already operating under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

Newly Updated Principal Development and Evaluation Model Now Available

The revised Principal Development and Evaluation State Model is now available to districts. The original state model was piloted during the 2012-13 school year. With feedback from the model pilot study, input from other stakeholders across the state, and the latest research in principal growth and evaluation, the pilot model was revised.  Minnesota Department of Education's growth-focused model is an option and a valuable resource for Minnesota districts. It may be adopted as a district's model, revised to meet a district's needs, or used as a resource to improve a district's present evaluation model. The model approaches evaluation from a growth perspective, built around a five-step continuous improvement process. To take a look at the new model and its resources, please go to the Principal Development and Evaluation State Model webpage. For assistance with questions, contact Mike Coty.

New Dyslexia Resources Available

New language within the Reading Well by Third Grade Law (Minn. Stat. § 120B.12) has added new reporting requirements for districts concerning students with dyslexia and convergence insufficiency. The department has published several resources to support districts as they work to increase their understanding of these disorders and update their local literacy plans.

Dyslexia Resources:
FAQ: Navigating the School System When a Child is Struggling with Reading or Dyslexia (2015)
Revising Local Literacy Plans to Include “Efforts to Identify Students with Dyslexia” (2017)
How Long Can Students Receive Interventions Prior to Comprehensive Evaluation? (2017)

Convergence Insufficiency Resource:
Convergence Insufficiency (CI) Fact Sheet (2017)

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. If your staff has not had conversations around dyslexia, these resources are a great way to provide opportunities for learning. The resources support development of plans for early identification and intervention for students who struggle with reading. These resources are all housed on the reading proficiency pages of the MDE website.
