EVELETH – A half-million dollar pavement reconstruction project is going to go a long way at Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport.
More than 2,000 feet, in fact.
A $570,000 project to reconstruct the airport’s hangar taxi lane pavement, realign a portion of the airport’s taxiways and complete groundwork for the construction of new T-hangars will be completed in the summer of 2017, said Gary Ulman, Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport director of operations.
“It’s a big deal for us,” said Ulman. “The last time this pavement was reconstructed was in the 1980s, so we’ve had some cracking issues. With this reconstruction, we will be good for the next 30 years.”
IRRRB is supporting the project with a $52,000 Development Infrastructure grant. The Federal Aviation Administration and Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport Authority are contributing $518,000.
“A lot of federal funding comes back into the area when projects like this happen,” said Ulman.
The project is the first phase of a two-phase improvement plan. The second phase, for which additional funding will be required, will improve runway traffic flow.
The airport accommodates nearly 8,000 take-offs and landings annually, including general aviation flights, services to the mining industry, freight delivery and charter flights.
