The Lowry Avenue Northeast planning process has begun and will be completed this fall. Efforts will focus on six key Lowry Avenue intersections: Marshall Street, 2nd Street, University Avenue, Monroe Street, Washington Street and Central Avenue. Currently, the project team is gathering information on traffic counts, demographics, property values, and reviewing previous plans.
Community input will be invaluable to developing options for how these intersections can support business growth, offer housing options, and improve the environment for bicycles, pedestrians, vehicles, transit and freight.
The study will include an implementation strategy for designing and constructing recommended improvements in collaboration with project partners.
Hennepin County, in cooperation with the City of Minneapolis, the northeast neighborhoods, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation, is hosting the first public workshop for the Lowry Avenue Northeast plan on Thursday, February 27 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Edison High School, Media Room, 700 22nd Avenue N.E., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55418.
The workshop will begin with a presentation on recently-gathered corridor information followed by a community input activity focused on transportation and economic opportunities in the study intersection areas. Please plan on staying for the entire workshop. Contact Carol Anderson for more information and watch the project webpage for updates.
Lowry Avenue Community Works convened a group of neighborhood and agency representative last summer to review proposals for the vacant county-owned land across from the North Regional Library. The selected developer, Project for Pride in Living, will begin construction of six, for-sale townhomes beginning in 2015.
Betty Danger’s Country Club, the latest offering from the owner of Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge, will feature a 66-foot dine-in ferris wheel that rotates slowly as diners eat and drink TexMex, while enjoying views of the Mississippi River, the Lowry Avenue Bridge and the Minneapolis skyline.
The City of Minneapolis Planning Commission approved an expanded site plan in January, which includes redevelopment of the Lowry-Marshall Car Wash property and the former Psycho Suzi's location next door. Other features include additional outdoor dining space, an outdoor miniature golf course and a food truck.
It’s been an unusually cold and snowy winter season in Minnesota. Planning and preparing for extreme conditions can keep you and your family safe. Remember to cover exposed skin surfaces to protect from frostbite, wear layers of clothing including gloves and a hat, and stay hydrated. More information on winter safety can be found on the Hennepin County Emergency Management webpage.
