A selection committee made up of neighborhood representatives and agency staff recently recommended to the Hennepin County Board that the consulting firm Stantec lead the update of the 2002 Lowry Avenue Corridor Plan for northeast Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Board approved the contract on November 19.
The all-local team includes Toole Design Group, who will support planning for community engagement and bicycle and pedestrian needs, and Floodplain Collective, a northeast artist collaborative. The work includes intersection design at six key intersections, redevelopment concepts for these intersections and a water management strategy.
The first step in the planning process will be to meet with neighborhood representatives to create a community engagement strategy. We encourage you to contact your local neighborhood organization and share your ideas on how you would like to participate in the planning process.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is an active project partner in Lowry Avenue Community Works. The 3,282 MnDOT statewide employees work to keep 11,859 miles of roads and 4,590 bridges efficient and safe.
MnDOT also handles major road repair for University and Central avenues in northeast Minneapolis (including the new asphalt laid in the past two years) and partners with the City of Minneapolis to coordinate street signals, street sweeping, pot holes and snow plowing. These Lowry Avenue Community Works partners will work together to upgrade the pedestrian ramps at the Lowry Avenue intersections of University and Central avenues by the year 2018. These critical improvements will make it safer and more accessible for all users to cross the street.
Before fall gives over to winter, here's one last blast of the summer: the sights and sounds of Open Streets MPLS/Harvest Fest. The all day event took place on on the beautiful boulevard of Lowry Avenue North, Saturday, September 21 and brought in people from all over the city, offering live music, art, tasty food, dancing, and fun-filled educational activities for everyone.
The event gave attendees the opportunity to stroll, bike or skate the closed street, free of motorized traffic, to meet their neighbors and learn about the diverse businesses and organizations of Lowry Avenue North.
