A three-phase road construction project to realign the intersection of Sixth Avenue North and Fifth Street North in Minneapolis will begin Oct. 8. Residents and business owners should expect detours around construction activity. When this work is completed the intersection at Fifth Street North and Sixth Avenue North will be a four-way signalized intersection.
Phase One is scheduled to take place from Oct. 8 - 26 (see the diagram below). The eastern leg of Fifth Street North will be closed at the Fifth Street North and Sixth Avenue North intersection. The Fifth Street North merge to and from Sixth Avenue North will be limited to one lane in each direction.
Phase Two will begin the end of October, and Phase Three will begin in November. Updates on these phases of construction will be provided closer to their start date.
Catenary Poles Removed
Contractors removed the existing catenary poles and other components from the site; a catenary system keeps light-rail transit vehicles moving. Utility work and trenching operations for stormwater piping are also ongoing.
