Hennepin County Library has resources to support youth who are learning English, as well as their families. For more information, talk to us in-person at any library location. You can also Ask Us your questions via phone, email, text, or live chat with staff. Chat is available Monday-Thursday 9-9, Friday-Saturday 9-5, and Sunday 12-5.

Finding books in other languages

Studies have found that students who have strong literacy skills in their native language will improve their English reading levels faster than those who don't. Additionally, reading with family members in their shared language at home helps students connect reading with fun, connection, and relaxation.

To support reading in the student's native language, you can explore some of our most popular language collections in the online catalog

If families would prefer to browse in person and see what's on the shelf, you can check out this list of language collections by library and language

Spanish speakers can also access Biblioteca Tumble using their library card to view animated, talking picture books with highlighted text.

Online encyclopedias in Spanish and Arabic

In addition to encyclopedias and databases in English to help with school work, the library also has two encyclopedias in other languages: Spanish and Arabic.

Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos (World Book)

For students who speak Spanish, Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos includes full-text articles in Spanish on people, places, history, science, and more. It includes activities and science projects, as well as Spanish language newspapers.
