Bridge inspection to impact motor vehicle traffic starting Monday

Starting Monday, August 12, bridge crews will inspect the Washington Avenue Bridge (County Road 122) over the Mississippi River.

Routinely done every one to two years as part of federal guidelines, bridge inspections allow our engineers and technicians to thoroughly examine the bridge to determine if preventative maintenance work is needed.

To inspect this bridge, crews will use large bucket trucks called snooper trucks parked on the bridge to examine the sides and underneath.

Access and impacts

Due to limited space, one direction of traffic will close depending on where crews are inspecting. Weather permitting, work is anticipated to take up to five days to complete, and will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Detour signage will be on site to guide you around.

The upper pedestrian level and Metro Green Line on the bridge will remain open.

People using university, local and/or regional bus services should expect schedule and route/stop changes on Washington Avenue. For more information and updates, please contact your transit service provider or go to their website.

Crews inspecting eastbound first

The eastbound lane on Washington Avenue Bridge will close first. Inspection work is expected to take two days to complete.

During the closure, the detour for people driving will use:

  • 3rd Street
  • Cedar Avenue/Washington Avenue (County Road 152)
  • Northbound I-35W
  • University Avenue (County Road 36)
  • Oak Street
  • Fulton Street/East River Parkway

Westbound to follow

The westbound lane on Washington Avenue Bridge will close once the eastbound lane reopens. Inspection work is expected to take three days to complete.

During the closure, the detour for people driving will use:

  • East River Parkway/Fulton Street
  • Oak Street/4th Street (County Road 37)
  • Southbound I-35W
  • Washington Avenue/Cedar Avenue
  • 3rd Street

Road and utility projects happening nearby

People using the detour route to get around the bridge closure should expect heavy traffic and delays due to work occurring on University Avenue and Oak Street. These projects are being scheduled for times when traffic around the university is typically at its lowest.

Repaving project on University Avenue

Starting Monday, August 12, Hennepin County crews are scheduled to repave University Avenue between I-35W and Huron Boulevard. This work will be completed under traffic and expected to take up to a week to complete. People driving should expect delays and day-to-day traffic configuration changes when traveling through the area.

CenterPoint Energy project on University Avenue and Oak Street

During the week of August 12, CenterPoint Energy crews are scheduled to work on gas service lines on University Avenue between Oak and Ontario streets, as well as on Oak Street between 4th Street and University Avenue.
