This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I.

For 99 of the past 100 years, Americans have remembered all those who served our country in uniform in the Great War on November 11th, first as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954, as Veterans Day.

 

Community Events

 

Women Physicians in WWI Exhibit

This exhibition celebrates the contributions of these unsung heroes - women, who even though they had capabilities equal to their male colleagues were not permitted the same military rank and privileges but made lasting contributions in the efforts of WWI.  There will be a collection of articles, book chapters, and historic photographs that will provide additional insight into this important era.

VA Medical Center Town Hall

The Minneapolis VA Medical Center will host a Veterans Town Hall where leaders from the Veterans Health Benefits Administration will be available as well as leaders from the Veterans Benefits Administration Regional Office and also from Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Vietnam War Roundtable

This new series offered at Concordia University is an opportunity for Veterans, as well as those interested in the war and it's legacy, to gather on a monthly basis to honor, remember, and understand this tumultuous time.

The State of Minnesota Veterans Day Event - Honoring All Who Served

  • Sunday, November 11, 2018
  • 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. -- FREE breakfast
  • 10:00 a.m. --  Program begins
  • Veterans Memorial Community Center
  • 8055 Barbara Ave., Inver Grove Heights, MN

This event is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the Minnesota Commanders' Task Force and is open to the public. This year there will be a special focus on the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended WWI. The program will conclude with the nation-wide Tolling of the Bell at 11:00 a.m. in remembrance of those who served and sacrificed.

 

 

100th Anniversary World War I Remembrance

This Veteran's Day, we are remembering World War I, 100 years later and are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the armistice along Victory Memorial Drive.

Around 11:00 a.m., the flagpole will cast a shadow on the plaza, weather permitting.

Bells of Peace

The Oratorio Society of Minnesota will conduct a "Bells of Peace" ceremony.

Veterans Day Observation at the St. Paul Vietnam Wall

The 173rd Airborne Brigade Association Chapter 15, Special Forces Association Chapter 20, and the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 320, will host a Veterans Day Observation at the Vietnam Wall.

World War I Armistice Centenary Concert

Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I with this Veterans Day concert featuring the U.S. premiere of Patrick Hawes' The Great War Symphony along with other wartime tunes.

Armistice Centennial

Join the Twin Cities local and international communities in Brit's Clubhouse Room. There will be live music, a color guard, and words honoring global Veterans on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended WWI.

Minnesota Cold Weather Rule

The Cold Weather Rule (CWR) is now in effect, (October 15 - April 15). People who need help in paying their heating bills must contact their natural gas or electric utility company to make and keep a payment plan in order to receive CWR protection.

 

 

Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County (CAP-HC)

CAP-HC works with homeowners and renters with low incomes to help them pay energy costs, such as a heating bill, furnace repair, or weatherization, between October 1 and May 30 each year.

Housinglink is a free resource available to help renters find affordable housing in locations with access to schools, employment, transportation, and community resources.

Transportation

 

Metro Transit has developed a program to help low-income riders, called the Transit Assistance Program (TAP). Qualified commuters will be able to ride the bus or train any time for $1.
