The board awarded bikeway grants, accepted funding for a study on disparities within health care and criminal justice systems, approved a contract to provide legal representation for people facing deportation and more.

8 projects receive bikeway grants

The board awarded $585,275 of bicycle capital improvement grants to expand the county's bikeway network. The following projects will receive funding:

  • City of Bloomington, $90,000 to expand and reconstruct a multi-use trail along France Avenue  
  • City of Excelsior, $20,000 for a feasibility study of bicycle and pedestrian facilities along Mill Street 
  • City of Hopkins, $100,000 to construct a multi-use trail along Excelsior Boulevard
  • City of Minneapolis, $100,000 to construct intersection safety improvements and a multi-use trail along East Hennepin Avenue  
  • City of Minnetonka, $100,000 to construct a multi-use trail along Plymouth Road  
  • City of New Hope, $55,275 to construct on-street bicycle facilities along Boone Avenue North and off-street trail improvements between Medicine Lake Road and 28th Avenue  
  • Three Rivers Park District, $100,000 to design and construct a culvert at the railroad bridge at Baker Park Road to connect to bicycle facilities  
  • Three Rivers Park District, $20,000 for a feasibility study to close a regional trail gap on the West Mississippi River Regional Trail

County to study health outcomes of people on probation

The board accepted $72,647 from the University of Minnesota to conduct a study on how disparities in the health care and criminal justice system overlap. The study will include data analysis and interviews with probation clients, probation officers and health care providers.

Board approves contract to provide legal representation for people facing deportation

The board voted in a 4 to 3 decision to approve a $275,000 contract with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid to provide legal representation to Hennepin County residents who meet income qualifications. The nonprofit will use a portion of this funding to create materials in multiple languages informing people about their immigration rights during the booking process.

Geffen appointed as Facility Services director 

The board confirmed the appointment of Margo Geffen as director of Facility Services, the department responsible for management of county facilities, planning and project management of facility projects, security and workplace safety. Geffen has managed the Housing and Development division of Hennepin County Public Works since 2014 and brings over 15 years of real estate experience to this role.

Public hearing on county's report to HUD

The county will host a public hearing to gather comments on its 2017 program year report to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development relating to housing and community development grants.
