As an educator, you know that young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Youth who read, discover, connect and learn all summer are better prepared for school in the fall.
There are many ways youth and their caregivers can participate in summer learning at Hennepin County Library. We have opportunities for youth on summer break as well as those enrolled in summer school or other structured learning programs.
To learn and have fun all summer long, youth can:
- Review a book and win a free book. Kids can write or draw a review to enter Read Write Draw and teens can review books to enter Best Book Ever.
- Attend fun, educational library programs related to reading, writing, art, science, music, and physical education.
- Join a book club.
- Spend time at the library pursuing individual learning and interests and making connections with caring adults and peers.
Our Summer Learning dates are Saturday, June 9 through Saturday, Aug 25. Visit our summer learning page for all the information you need: www.hclib.org/summerlearning
In-person book clubs at the library
Youth can connect with peers in library book clubs meeting at many libraries throughout the summer. Book clubs are offered for a wide range of ages, reading levels
and interests. Trained facilitators lead our book clubs and enrich the reading
experience.

Online Kids Reading Discussion Club
Kids entering grades 4-6 can also join our online discussion club. There is no need to read any specific books—participants just share about whatever they are reading and learning this summer. The club includes weekly discussion questions, trivia quizzes and opinion polls. The online club offers children and their families flexibility—they can participate all summer long or just whenever they have time, at any time of day. Kids need to have access to the internet (and may use a computer at the library or a mobile device) to participate.

Encourage your students to keep reading over the summer months, a time when reading skills may decline.
We can help find books to match the interests and abilities of any reader. We have suggested reading for fans of adventure, fantasy, funny stories, nonfiction, and more! We also have a variety of formats including eBooks, audiobooks, and graphic novels.
Reading for fun is one of the best ways to help youth develop a lifelong love of learning and reading.
