Veteran's Identification Card

ID Card

The Veteran's ID Card (VIC) is finally available for veterans who served in the armed forces, including the reserve components, and who have a discharge of honorable or general (under honorable conditions). This ID card will provide proof of military service and may be used to obtain promotional discounts and other services that are offered to Veterans without them having to carry their paper DD 214s around with them.

To request a VIC, please visit vets.gov and then click on "Apply for Printed Veteran ID Card" on the bottom left of the page.

Veterans who apply for the VIC should receive it within 60 days.

"Keys for Heroes"

Minneapolis has now joined a statewide program, "Keys for Heroes", to help reduce the number of homeless veterans. Since the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs began the Minnesota Homeless Veteran Registry in 2014, it has housed 1,218 veterans who were homeless. Out of the 1,218 veterans who were housed, 613 were in Hennepin County.

The Minnesota Homeless Veteran Registry ensures that veterans have access to appropriate housing and services if the veteran is experiencing homelessness. There are currently 110 veterans in Hennepin County that are experiencing homelessness and are on the registry. Anyone who served in the armed forces, Reserves or National Guard can join the registry regardless of their type of discharge.

Veterans are encouraged to call 1-888-LinkVet (1-888-546-5838) to join the Minnesota Homeless Veteran Registry.

Community Events

Home for the Holidays

Hennepin County Veterans Service Officers attended the "Home for the Holidays" event at Target Field on December 14th, 2017 to help bring awareness and support to veteran homelessness in our community. This event was sponsored by WCCO in collaboration with the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV).

One of MACV's biggest programs provides transitional and permanent housing to help veterans achieve self-sufficiency. The goal of the program is to place veterans in appropriate housing where they can receive services such as job skills training, job search assistance, mortgage assistance, and food vouchers.
