Welcome to the first issue of the K-12 Educators Newsletter. This issue is full of tips about Hennepin County Library resources for you and your students as you go back to school.
We have resources available online and at all our libraries to help K-12 students with history, language arts, math, science and more. To discover all the different homework resources, visit our Homework help page.
Tutors online
Students in grades 3-12 can receive free one-to-one live online tutoring assistance every day of the week from 1-11p.m. (with their library card) in English or in Spanish. For details, see Tutors online.
Tutors at the library
Do you have students who could benefit from extra tutoring or
mentoring support after school? The K-12 Homework Help program is a free in-person
tutoring program offered at 12 Hennepin County Library locations. Trained
tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with students to support them in
completing their assignments as they learn in a safe, welcoming, and supportive
environment. No advance sign-up needed. For locations and times, see the Tutors at the library schedule.
Hennepin
County Library provides free access to a wide range of databases, learning
tools and other online resources at all our library locations. You’ll find
useful and reliable information from encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers and
other sources not openly available on the internet. You can also access our
online resources from school or home with your Hennepin County Library card. See Online resources on our Homework help page.
Featured resource: Explora Kids and Explora Teens
Explora Kids and Explora Teen give students full-text articles from magazines, newspapers, and reference books about current events, people, places, animals, history and more. Includes primary sources, images and maps. Full-text articles are assigned a Lexile reading level indicator. Students need a library card to use Explora databases on a computer from outside a library location.
We can help you discover books to engage students of all ages, interests and abilities. Ask library staff—via phone, email, text, or live chat—about finding the next great book to read.
We have book lists for a variety of genres covering everything from historical fiction to science fiction. Explore our book lists for teens and book lists for children.
Read aloud lists
Are you looking for a great chapter book to read aloud to your class? Or perhaps a volunteer is looking for a one-session picture book to read to your students. Our librarians have compiled fantastic suggestions of books that will entertain and delight groups of listeners. Each book listing has a link so you can easily request it. Find captivating chapter books to read aloud or picture books to read aloud.
We have free events at all our libraries. Encourage your students to find a Science and Nature event at their local library so they can keep learning and exploring in a fun environment during out-of-school time. Browse our Events page for all library events, or try a Science and Nature event this fall.
It’s free to get a Hennepin County Library card! Students can get a card in-person at any library location or apply online and their card will be mailed to them. No parent signature is needed. Access HCL online resources from computers outside library buildings with a library card, or use them to check out a wide variety of materials including books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines, and to download eBooks and music. Apply online for a library card.
You and your students can receive in person help from library staff at any library location. You can also Ask Us your questions via phone, email, text, or live chat with staff. Chat is available Monday-Thursday 9-9, Friday-Saturday 9-5, and Sunday 12-5.
