Hennepin County Commissioners Peter McLaughlin (center right) and Marion Greene (center left) joined volunteers at the 2016 Midtown Community Works Partnership Arbor Day planting event.
This Saturday, May 6, Midtown Community Works Partnership Arbor Day event volunteers will plant the 5,000th tree/shrub along the Midtown Greenway since the annual event began 17 years ago.
Join us for a special celebration and planting event:
- Saturday, May 6
- 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
- Along the greenway between 34th Avenue and 36th Avenue
There will be an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. near the 36th Avenue South stairs entrance. Planting will begin at 9:30 a.m. Snacks, coffee, water and shovels will be provided. Please bring your own gloves.
Tree Trust staff and Tree Care advisors will be on hand to share their knowledge about tree and shrub planting. This year, Hennepin county foresters will also join us to share information about emerald ash borer and what you can do to help save ash trees in Minneapolis.
This event is made possible through the support of the following partners: Allina Health, Wells Fargo, Midtown Greenway Coalition, Tree Trust, Peace Coffee, Birchwood Cafe, Hennepin County Regional Rail Authority and Hennepin County.
Starting Monday, May 8, Portland Avenue (County Road 35) and Cedar Avenue (County Road 152) in Minneapolis will close between 28th Street and Lake Street as reconstruction of the two bridges over the Midtown Greenway begins.
Both bridges will be closed to all road traffic for the duration of the project. Work is expected to last one construction season and be significantly complete with the road reopened by December this year.

Upcoming greenway trail impacts
Starting Monday, May 15, the greenway trail is expected to close at Cedar Avenue as crews demolish the bridge. This work is expected to last several days with the trail reopened by the weekend. See below for detour information.
Once demolition of the Cedar Avenue bridge is complete and the trail is reopened, crews will begin demolition of the Portland Avenue bridge and the trail will be closed at this location for approximately five days. This closure is expected to happen Monday, May 22.
Efforts will be made throughout construction to minimize trail impacts whenever possible. In general, crews will stagger work so the trail is not closed at both bridge locations at once. Full closures of the trail are expected to be relatively infrequent and short-term.
Visit the project website for detour information and to signup for regular project updates announcements.
