66th Street reconstruction project

County Road 53 in Richfield

Reconstruction begins Monday on project's western segment

Construction kicks off this Monday, March 27, between Xerxes and Girard avenues.

Most of what you will see starting Monday will be traffic reduced to one lane in each direction and pavement removals between Penn and Girard avenues. Crews will be grinding off layers of pavement throughout the area in preparation for work to begin under the roadway. After pavement is removed, crews will start work on various activities including utility removal and replacement.

Overnight traffic control setup starts Sunday night

Construction crews will initially begin working between Penn and Girard avenues, and will need to set up traffic cones and barriers to shift traffic in the work zone. Traffic crews will be setting up these items and shifting traffic starting this Sunday night. There will be other traffic related activity overnight during the week.

Please be aware that while crews will try to minimize noise, there will be some night noise associated with this work (equipment hauling, back up lights and signals, etc.). The work is being conducted at night during lower traffic levels for the safety of the crews and traveling public.

Alternate routes for local traffic will be marked starting Monday; through traffic will be advised to use Highway 62

For local east-west 66th Street traffic via car or bicycle during the initial start of work, you are advised to use Humboldt Avenue, 69th Street and Penn Avenue during the initial start of work (see map below). This will also be a signed alternate for local traffic. Buses will be detoured via 64th and 65th streets. 64th and 65th streets are not designated alternate routes for cars or trucks.

We plan to have this alternate route in place for several months. It is designed to help local residents get around the area and to ensure that customers and clients of various local business have alternate access. In April, there will be a few weeks when local traffic will be detoured to either Girard or Irving avenues while work is done at Humboldt Avenue and 66th Street.

The City of Richfield will be monitoring traffic along the alternate route.

Alt. Route

Humboldt Avenue access closing April 3 for approximately 1 - 2 weeks

Starting April 3, access to Humboldt Avenue on the south side of 66th Street (6600 block of Humboldt) will be closed. The access is expected to remain closed for approximately one to two weeks as crews work on replacing underground utilities.

Access to the 6600 block of Humboldt Avenue will remain available from 67th Street. Eastbound and westbound 66th Street will also remain available during the Humboldt closure (please note this may be a gravel surface).

For local residents: check your garbage collection spot

If your garbage is currently picked up on 66th Street, it is recommended that you contact your collection service company to determine a temporary pickup location on a nearby side street.

For transit users: Metro Transit bus route changes go into effect Monday

Beginning Monday, buses between Xerxes and Humbolt avenues will be rerouted to local streets, and off of 66th Street, for the duration of major construction (see map below). These new routes were determined in order to maintain local service to residents during construction. The new routes will be in place through November 2017. Important notification: You may need to contact your phone/internet provider

CenturyLink is upgrading services from the current copper line to a new fiber optic line around the area, including inside a portion of the project area. The copper line will be taken out of service on March 31, 2017. A CenturyLink technician needs to switch your service at your property to the fiber optic line before that date. If you are not transferred to the new line before then, your service may be disconnected.

Please call either of the following numbers to set up an appointment with a technician as soon as possible:

  • 651-631-2682, Monday through Saturday between 9:00am and 7:00pm or Sunday between 11:00am and 5:00pm (Central Time).
  • 800-764-9504 between 10:00am and 7:00pm (Central Time), Monday through Friday.

Note: Though this mostly impacts CenturyLink customers, some other service providers located in the upgrade area may be impacted. It is recommended that you contact your internet or phone service provider to ensure that you will not be impacted.
