Please, don't text and drive

The Sheriff's Office wants everyone to get to their New Year's Eve parties safe this year. No matter where you are driving, there are a few things you should never do - texting while driving being one of them. 

Each year, texting while driving is responsible for an average of 70 deaths in MN - that is 70 people who were not able to celebrate the holidays with friends and family members. The facts tell the story, texting while driving is not worth the risk. So please, put down your phone, and thank you for being a safe driver.

Choose a sober ride

Yesterday, the Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Minneapolis and Saint Paul police departments, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol and Metro Transit, called upon everyone celebrating New Year's Eve to plan a sober ride to and from their parties. 

Metro Transit will be offering free rides on all Metro Transit vehicles starting at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve running until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

So far this year, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Minneapolis Police Department have made nearly 1,000 DWI arrests. Don't ring-in New Year's Eve in jail, plan ahead and choose a sober ride.

Special Deputies Wanted

Do you have an interest in giving back to your community? Last year our volunteer Special Deputies donated more than 25,000 hours of time to serve Hennepin County.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently recruiting Special Deputies, a group of highly-trained volunteers who are commissioned by the Sheriff to provide support for several of our day-to-day functions, parades, special events and community education.

Special Deputies must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, hold a valid driver's license, be a United States citizen and pass a background investigation. Once selected, candidates go through a 10-week Reserve School which takes place for 3 hours, one night per week. Special Deputies contribute 192 hours per year through duty shifts, training, special details and emergency call outs, and each member is required to work at least 16 hours per month.
