Updated environmental education activity guides now available

Environmental education activity guides

We recently completed an overhaul of our environmental education activity guides (formerly called toolkits). The activity guides can be used to engage audiences of all ages in learning about and taking action to protect the environment.

The activity guides cover a variety of topics, including air, energy and climate change, recycling, reducing food waste, reducing waste, and toxicity and hazardous waste. There are also general activities that can be applied to any environmental topic, background information to help educators and participants get up to speed on the issue, and tips for motivating behavior change.

Each activity guide includes essential background information, activity instructions and ideas, and resources specific to each topic.

Learn more and download the activities.

Choose to Reuse with coupons at local retailers

ctr

What is better than buying something new? Finding something cool to reuse! Like a one-of-a-kind set of dishes or a classic edition of a favorite book. The wedding dress worn only once, now half the price, or a baseball glove ready for another season. Sounds like a deal – because it is.

Hennepin County is partnering with 50 reuse retailers to offer Choose to Reuse coupons with discounts through October.

Spread the word

Get coupon books to distribute or business cards to promote the mobile app by contacting Kristin Pierskalla at kristin.pierskalla@hennepin.us or 612-348-4787.

A newsletter article, social media posts, and images are also available to promote Choose to Reuse.

Join the conversation: envisioning the future of environmental education for youth

youthee

Connecting youth to the natural world, helping them learn about environmental issues, and working with them to develop solutions is critical to prepare them for a world with increasingly complex environmental challenges.

Help Hennepin County understand how we can best support youth development and environmental education efforts by joining in a conversation to uncover the benefits of, barriers to, and effective strategies for engaging youth in environmental education.

Anyone interested in providing programs or services to youth, preparing them for the future, or protecting the environment is encouraged to attend.

Meetings are scheduled for the following dates and locations. Each meeting will be the same, so you only need to attend one.

  • Thursday, September 15 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, 2522 Marshall St NE in Minneapolis
  • Thursday, September 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brookdale Library in Brooklyn Center
  • Thursday, September 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Brookdale Library in Brooklyn Center

A meal and refreshments will be provided. Registration is free, but please RSVP.

Contact Alisa Reckinger at alisa.reckinger@hennepin.us or 612-348-4788 with any questions.

Green Partners garden bus tour recap

bustour
Master Water Steward, Christina Schmitt, shows the group the rain garden she built during her training with the Freshwater Society.

The summer Green Partners networking meeting hit the road for a garden tour. About 30 attendees hopped on a bus to visit three sites in Minneapolis: a residential rain garden constructed by Master Water Steward volunteers near Lake Nokomis, Roosevelt High School’s Sustainability Center developed by Spark-Y, and the Cleveland Neighborhood Garden. Each site was developed with the support of a Green Partners grant, providing attendees an opportunity to learn how grantees are using gardens to engage communities in learning about environmental issues. Learn more about current grant projects and future Green Partners networking meetings.

Green Partners project updates

The following projects are being funded through the Green Partners Environmental Education program. These groups have been busy engaging audiences in taking action to protect the environment. For more information about Green Partners grants, contact Patience Caso at patience.caso@hennepin.us or 612-348-9352.

Freedom Academy Charter School

freedomacademy

Last spring, students from Freedom Academy Charter School learned about gardening and composting by planting their own vegetables. Students will harvest their plants when they return to school this fall. Students also investigated water runoff and learned how rain gardens reduce runoff and prevent pollution.

Hiawatha College Prep

hiawatha

Students from the Hiawatha College Prep Green Team spent the previous school year researching recycling and composting programs and planting over 300 seedlings to start a pilot school garden. This school year, students will build on their recycling and composting research by implementing a compost program and building a demonstration garden.

Minnesota African Women’s Association

Minnesota African Women's Association

Minnesota African Women’s Association continues to train African peer educators on recycling, toxicity reduction and waste reduction. The most popular activity has been teaching participants how to make green cleaners.

Metro Blooms

beez

Metro Blooms engaged over 120 students from Minneapolis Public School in lessons exploring the connections between pollinators, native plants and stormwater. Students had the opportunity to observe a live bee hive, dissect flowers and identify native plants in raingardens.

Standish-Ericsson Neighborhood Association

The Standish-Ericsson Neighborhood Association has successfully launched a Clean Water Pledge. Neighbors are asked to pledge to take actions to protect Lake Hiawatha and Minnehaha Creek. Some of the actions pledged include redirecting downspouts away from hard surfaces, limiting the use of pesticides and herbicides, and keeping leaves out of the street. Neighbors who sign the pledge receive a yard sign to prompt conversation about protecting water quality among neighbors.
