Franklin Avenue Bridge (County Road 5) over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis closes Sunday

A reminder that at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, the Franklin Avenue Bridge (County Road 5) in Minneapolis will close to all traffic (motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians). The closure is expected to remain in place until Labor Day weekend.

In addition, the intersection of Franklin Avenue and East River Parkway will be closed Monday, May 9 from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. to assemble the crane that will be placed on the bridge deck for removal activities.

Motorists will be directed to use a detour that includes I-94, Huron Boulevard, University Avenue Southeast and 27th Avenue Southeast. Pedestrians and bicyclists have an option of using either travelling south to Lake Street/ Marshall Avenue or north to the Washington Avenue Bridge. Full detour information can be found on the project website.

This closure is needed to allow for removal of the existing bridge deck and placement of new deck panels. More than 360 deck panels constructed last year are ready for placement. These panels will be floated down the river and hoisted up to the bridge deck.

Once complete, the restored bridge will be closer to the original 1923 designs and will incorporate safe, modern, multimodal features such as separated on-road bike lanes, walkways, overlook nooks and architectural lighting.
