A report released Tuesday claims federal dollars invested in Great Lakes restoration efforts are returning far more back to the regional economy.
The research, led by the University of Michigan's Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics and reviewed by a panel of economists and other experts from outside the Great Lakes region, found that every $1 spent on Great Lakes restoration will return an average of $3.35 of additional economic activity through 2036.
The study, coordinated by the Great Lakes Commission and the Council of Great Lakes Industries, said the return will be even greater, topping $4 for every dollar spent, in Rust Belt communities like Detroit and Buffalo.

When it comes to finding a job straight out of college, Minnesota is among the best places to search.
In Forbes’ list of best employers for new graduates, Minnesota companies took five of those spots: General Mills, the State of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and 3M.
The State of Minnesota rang in at number 49, the only state government system to make the list of 250 employers.

Overall employment fell a tiny bit in August in Minnesota, but nobody gave construction companies the memo.
The construction industry gained 1,700 seasonally adjusted jobs during the month, the most of any industry tracked by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
The gains came as the state labor market as a whole shed just 200 jobs after adding more than 30,000 during the previous three months, according to a DEED report released Thursday.
That “statistically insignificant” loss wasn’t a surprise, said Steve Hine, director of DEED’s Labor Market Information Office. The statewide unemployment rate is down to 2.9 percent, the lowest rate since December 1999. July’s unemployment rate was 3 percent.

Vacancies at Minnesota employers climbed nearly 16 percent to a record 142,282, the state jobs agency said Friday, in another sign of the ultratight labor market.
The data came a day after the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development reported the state's unemployment rate dipped to 2.9 percent, the lowest since December 1999. Just 90,000 Minnesotans were unemployed in August, that report said.
Friday's data showed that, for the three months ended June 30, the state had 0.6 unemployed people for every job vacancy, a record low. The job vacancy rate was 5.2 percent, meaning there were 5.2 openings for every 100 jobs in the state, a record high.
"These figures reflect a very strong economy and high demand for labor statewide," Shawntera Hardy, the department commissioner, said in a statement. She said the agency and its partners need to keep investing in training programs to bring more people off the economic sidelines to fill employers' needs.

The University of Minnesota will host the women’s basketball Final Four at Target Center in 2022, the NCAA announced Monday.
The tournament championship will be held in Minneapolis for the first time since 1995, and the 2022 edition will fall on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the federal legislation in 1972 that created opportunities for women to play collegiate sports.
“Minnesota has a long-standing tradition of hosting marquee NCAA championships, and we are excited that the Women’s Final Four is coming back,” Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle said in a statement. “… We look forward to crowning a champion, while also celebrating the sport and this landmark anniversary.”
This event is the latest in a long list of premier collegiate championships to be hosted by the U in Minneapolis — women’s volleyball will be at Target Center in December; the men’s basketball Final Four at U.S. Bank Stadium in April 2019; wrestling at U.S. Bank Stadium in 2020, and men’s gymnastics at Maturi Pavilion in 2021.
