Steelworkers rally on Iron Range amid stalemate in contract talks

The crowd gathered in front of the Miners Memorial Building — where U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Lt. Gov. Tina Smith and Rep. Rick Nolan spoke — before marching to Olcott Park, where the rally continued.

Smith said Minnesota’s elected officials support the steelworkers. When she travels to the Iron Range, she can see steelworkers’ worry about how they’re going to make ends meet while steel and iron ore mines are idled, she said, adding, “Way too many people are idled.”

She encouraged the crowd, “Stand tall. Fight hard.”

Hundreds of demonstrators – workers, their family and supporters – rallied in Virginia, Minnesota, on Thursday, hoisting signs that read “Fair Contracts Now,” the Forum News Service reports.

Solidarity in Steel Rally and March Draws Iron Range Together
