WINTER TRAILS UPDATE - MARCH 24, 2022

This is your Explore Minnesota Winter Trails Update.

Warm temperatures have caused trail conditions to deteriorate rapidly. Most cross-country ski and snowmobile trails are either in poor condition or have been closed, and grooming has been suspended for the remainder of the season. There are a few exceptions in the far northeast corner of the state near International Falls and Grand Marais, but skiers and snowmobilers are advised to call ahead for the most current conditions before traveling. This is the final Explore Minnesota Winter Trails Update of the 2021/2022 winter season.

Explore Minnesota offers a wide array of email updates about other fun travel topics, including festivals and events, fishing and birding. Sign up to receive any or all of these updates to make the most of your upcoming Minnesota adventures!

Northeast Region

International Falls/Rainy Lake

Roughly 1 foot of snow fell on trails in the International Falls/Rainy Lake vicinity on Tuesday. While grooming has been suspended, riders should enjoy decent conditions on area snowmobile trails for another week or so. Learn more about International Falls/Rainy Lake snowmobile trails. The Tilson Creek Ski Trail near the Rainy Lake Visitors Center is reported to be rolled and in good condition for cross-country skiing.

Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail

In Cook County, just north of Grand Marais up the Gunflint Trail, the Central Gunflint Ski Trail System remains in good condition. Roughly 6 inches of new snow fell during the recent snowstorm and trails should be freshly groomed by the weekend. Most sections of trail have a base measuring 4-8 inches. Off-trail snow depth is 15-24 inches. Conditions should be similar for other ski trail systems along the Gunflint Trail. For the most current ski and snowmobile trail conditions in the area, check out the Cook County Winter Trail Conditions page.
