Weekly Fall Color Update - Sept. 26, 2019

Peak fall color has arrived in northeast Minnesota! Maple trees are bursting with a kaleidoscope of peach, fuchsia and bright yellow leaves. Ash and aspen trees are quickly turning yellow, brightening the landscape and fostering a deep sense of warmth.

• Bear Head Lake State Park, Ely
• Tettegouche State Park, Silver Bay
• Moose Lake State Park, Moose Lake

Increasing amounts of red and orange leaves can be seen among the already rich backdrop of gold and orange colors. The tall prairie grasses in many parks are a deep maroon and gold.

• Big Bog State Recreation Area, Waskish
• Lake Bemidji State Park, Bemidji
• Buffalo River State Park, Moorhead

The maples are turning bright yellow, orange and red, and the ash trees are a stunning yellow. Sumac coloring varies from orange to vibrant red and crimson, and the prairie grasses remain gold, maroon and purple. The oaks are taking on burgundy hues.

Pops of color are visible in the maples and there has been a general lightening of the forests overall. The sumac and dogwood remain very colorful, with bright red and deep crimson hues. Prairie grasses across the metro dot the landscape with maroon and gold.

• Wild River State Park, Center City, east of North Branch
• William O'Brien State Park, Marine on St. Croix

The sumac has turned brilliant shades of scarlet and crimson, while the ash, aspen and maple trees are adding buttery yellow and fiery reddish-orange hues to the forest canopy. Golden tones fill the tall grass prairies. Watch for migrating great blue herons and egrets.
