Message from the Principal....

Dear Centerville Parents,

At our late start on Tuesday, members of our district Teaching and Learning Department presented to staff about online assessments that can be used with our new language arts curriculum.  It is amazing how data from these assessments can be broken down to see what standards students know and what they still need to work on.  By utilizing the data, teachers can divide students into groups and access materials to provide reteaching for some, while at the same time providing enrichment activities for others who have already demonstrated competency.

I believe the biggest difference with the new reading curriculum is how the skills students need (i.e. main idea, supporting details) are taught.  The old way was to read a story, discuss it and then take a test recalling details from that same story.   The new way is to teach the skills students need first.  When the skills are taught first, students are then are able to transfer those skills to a story they have never read before.  We believe this will benefit students greatly in their reading abilities and on future assessments.

I know 2 hour late starts are a challenge for parents, but as educators it provides us time for ongoing staff development for teachers to continuously improve.

Have a great weekend!

Wayne Whitwam
