Message from Mr. Whitwam....

Dear Centerville Parents,

Thanks to all of the parents who came to the CPTA meeting on Tuesday night.  It was the best turnout we have had in my 5 years here at Centerville!  We are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing group of parents who are committed to Centerville Elementary's students, staff and community. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 17th at 6:30.  During that meeting, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers will be presenting on the new AVID program.

We had 25 children take advantage of the childcare provided by the CPTA.  In the past, they have not had as many children attend meetings, so please know they have made appropriate changes to ensure that your children are taken care of and are having fun.  Moving forward, they will have a total of 3 sitters available.  You can find the meeting minutes on the Centerville website or you can go to the Centerville CPTA Facebook page.

At the meeting a question came up about putting a freeze on lunch accounts for seconds and extras, like juice.  If you have any questions or would like to put limits on your child’s account, please contact Heidi Erickson: or call 763-792-5422.

Students and staff ended the week in spirit wear as we celebrate homecoming at Centennial.  I hope to see some of you at the football game tonight!

Direct Drive 2017

If your child did not bring home a Direct Drive 2017 form this week, please click on the link above to check it out.  This is a HUGE fundraiser for Centerville School.  Thank you in advance for your participation.

Volunteers Needed

Do you have an hour during the week that you would like to help us out?  We are looking for several people who would be interested in picking up Power Packs at the middle school and bringing them to Centerville school.  This can be done either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  The more people that sign up to help us, the fewer times you would have to do it.  Last year we had 7 volunteers, so each person went once every 7 weeks. If you are interested, please contact Judy Montain at

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers that would like to help out our teaching staff with both working with students that could benefit from extra help and helping with cutting, pasting, and all kinds of fun stuff!  We are looking for someone who can come at the same time each week but on your schedule. We had two awesome volunteers last year that we set up a Google.doc for and had teachers sign up when they could use the help.  It worked beautifully. If you are interested, please contact Judy Montain at

November 3rd

Jukebox Time Machine:  A presentation of hits through         the decades.

4th Grade music program is scheduled for Thursday, November 30th at 6:00 pm.

Art Adventure Volunteers Needed

The Art Adventure program at Centerville Elementary is currently seeking volunteers.  We need “Picture People” to help present works of art to CVE students. The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) offers parent volunteers training and materials on specific works of art, this is usually one morning or evening in November. During the month of January 2018, parents then present the art to CVE students in their classrooms.   We will work around your schedule the best we can, and try to pair parents with their own kids’ classrooms – in most cases this means 1 to 1.5 hours, once a week for the month of January.

This valuable program—now in its 21st year here at CVE—needs parent volunteers for another successful year.  This year’s theme is How People Lived and will certainly spark lots of insights and discussion from the children.  The kids LOVE this program, they look forward to it every year and there is no sweeter sound than the “ooohs” and “aaaahs” when we show them the art we brought in that day.  If you want to see Art Adventure in action please check out this website:

Please consider being a part of the Art Adventure program here at CVE.  If you are interested or would like more information, contact Gretchen Tieu at or 651-283-6673.

Learn all the skills to become a confident sitter.  Prepare for potential emergency situations, learn first aid and how to care for young children.  Explore and discuss strategies on how to deal with challenging behaviors, prepare meals and snacks and diapering and bottle feeding.  This session of Confident Sitter is being held on the first non-school day, Mon., Oct. 2 at Rice Lake Elementary.

NEW!  Gear Engineers (gr. 1-5)  *after school activity at Centerville Elementary!

This class enforces STEM principles using Lego bricks.  Build a trundle wheel, merry-go-round and design their own amusement park ride.  Explore gearing concepts and modifications and extensions.  Class begins Sept. 28.

If you should need care for your child on non-school days and/or during two-hour late starts, you can utilize Kids Club for just these days.  You don’t have to be regularly scheduled in Kids Club to utilize care for non-school days and for two-hour late starts.  You must complete a Kids Club registration contract requesting drop-in care for care on non-school and two-hour late start days.  Registrations accepted as space allows.  Go online HERE to register.  Call Dawn Turnblad, 763-792-6193 with questions, or Molly Nelson, 763-792-6110.
