This 1.5-hour class is for members of the community over the age of 16 who want to learn best practices in suicide prevention.

A certificate of attendance is available for this class and will be sent after you fill out the evaluation. Register for the upcoming class:

Share Your Post-9/11 Story

Share Your Post-9/11 Story

This retrospective study of the Minnesota experience since 9/11 will chronicle individual service members and state units deployed overseas as well as a range of home-front stories. Minnesotans were in the towers, planes and Pentagon on September 11, among the first boots on the ground in Afghanistan and some of the very last to leave in 2021.

Minnesotans also served in long and repeated deployments to Iraq and across the greater Middle East. Closer to home, communities came together in new ways to support the families of those deployed and welcomed immigrants as they had done before. Together, these stories start to stitch together a shared state history in America’s longest war.

The resulting retrospective will be published as a PDF in the summer of 2023 and be made available to the public without charge. Published copies will be provided to schools and libraries.

Share your stories & photos here.

This is a joint effort of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum and MDVA’s 9/11 & Global War on Terrorism Task Force. It is inspired by much earlier state efforts to draft definitive histories in the aftermath of earlier conflicts (Civil War, Great War, etc) and is undertaken for the benefit of future generations.

MDVA Promoting Free Gun Locks via PSAs

On Monday, May 2, MDVA began airing Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on Twin Cities FOX 9 TV to encourage gun owners to lock their weapons with a gun lock to help prevent Veteran suicide. These 30-second PSAs will run through June.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a locked gun can mean the difference between a tragic outcome and a life saved for someone in crisis. Though Veterans are well-versed in firearm safety, all gun owners should understand that during emotional or stressful times, delaying access to a gun could mean the difference between life and death. Gun locks can prevent someone in crisis from tragically taking their own life.

To reduce these preventable tragedies, MDVA is offering free gun locks. To request a gun lock, please email SuicidePrevention.MDVA@state.mn.us with your name and address. This information will not be shared; requests are confidential.
