Governor Dayton Announces Upcoming Vacancy for Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General

ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton announced today the commencement of a process to fill the vacancy for the Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General, created upon the upcoming retirement of Major General Richard Nash, Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard, at the end of October.

“I thank Major General Richard Nash for his extraordinary service to our state and country, which includes his serving seven years as the Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard,” said Governor Dayton. “General Nash has provided superb leadership for the Guard and the people of Minnesota. His devotion to our Guardsmen and women and their families has been incomparable.

"I look forward to receiving the recommendations of the Committee to select the next leader of the Minnesota National Guard.”

Governor Dayton has created the Committee on Adjutant General Selection to aid in the review and selection process for this upcoming vacancy. The Committee consists of the following individuals:

  • Ramona Dohman, Commissioner of Minnesota Department of Public Safety;
  • Kimberly Holmes, General Counsel for the Office of Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith;
  • Steve Hunegs, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council;
  • General Joseph Kelly, Director of Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management;
  • Jim Kosmo, author and retired Managing Editor of several suburban newspapers
  • The Hon. Charles Porter, Senior Judge for Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District;
  • The Hon. Albert Quie, former Governor of Minnesota;
  • Major General Harry Sieben, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army;
  • Jaime Tincher, Chief of Staff for the Office of Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith

The members of the Committee will consider applicants and offer recommendations to Governor Dayton. An applicant must be a commissioned officer of the National Guard of Minnesota, with not less than ten years military service in the Minnesota National Guard or the armed forces of the United States, at least three of which shall have been commissioned and who shall have reached the grade of a field officer.

The application process is now open for this vacancy. An individual wishing to apply may request an application by contacting Andrew Olson, Director of Appointments, via email at Andrew.c.olson@state.mn.us. Application materials are due by the close of business Friday, June 30, 2017.
