Afton State Park
Nestled along the St. Croix River, a mere 30 minutes from the Twin Cities, Afton State Park should be high on your list of places to visit this winter. Explore the snowshoe trails or slide along the groomed cross-country ski trails. After you're done playing in the winter wonderland, head to the toasty trail center. Camper cabins and yurts are available to rent year-round (and never fear, they're heated). Play for the day or stay for the week.

The List - Snowshoes
Shuffle through the fluffy snow on a pair of giant slippers. Okay, maybe not slippers but just as fun - snowshoes! You don't need any special skills to enjoy a snowy walk around the park. Many state parks have designated snowshoe trails for you to enjoy and most allow travel anywhere throughout the park. Don't own a pair? No worries! Many parks have rentals available for $6 a day.

Traveler Tip - Layering Clothes
As you bundle up the kiddos and head outside this winter, it's easy to stay comfy-cozie with three simple layers.

First, the base layer. This layer will help keep your body cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Look for clothing with synthetic fibers. These will keep moisture away from your skin.

Second, the middle layer. Here is where you'll want insulation. For those colder days, this layer will help retain heat and keep it close to your body. Clothing made from fleece and natural fibers like wool are ideal.

Third, the shell layer. Here's where you'll be protected from the weather - the wind, rain or snow. You'll want this layer roomy enough to fit over your other clothes. Wear waterproof or water-resistant, breathable shells.

Now that you're all bundled up it's time to head outside and play! Click the button below for our Winter Activities Guide and find a whole new way to play this season.
