PolyMet Permitting Update

Jan. 22, 2019

About This Quarterly Update

To provide regular updates on the State’s review of PolyMet’s applications for the NorthMet project, the DNR and MPCA have each been issuing quarterly messages to those who have signed up to the GovDelivery list.  With DNR having completed decisions on all pending permit applications for the NorthMet project, this is the seventh and final quarterly permitting update issued by the DNR.

Permits Issued

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued 11 permits for Poly Met Mining, Inc.’s (PolyMet’s) proposed NorthMet mining project in northeast Minnesota on November 1, 2018.

The DNR issued a permit to mine, six water appropriation permits, two dam safety permits, a public waters work permit, and an endangered species takings permit for the NorthMet project.

The permit to mine includes a financial assurance plan and wetland replacement plan.

This completed the DNR’s consideration of the major permits that the project needs from the DNR in order to proceed.  However, the NorthMet project still requires a wetlands permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, in addition to other local permits and approvals.

The State PolyMet Permitting Portal will remain available for those who wish to access any of the DNR or MPCA information linked to the site.  The agencies may use the site in the future to convey information on major project developments as needed.
