Teamwork is what best describes Tim and Scarlett Feiler of Royalton as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources 2015 ATV Volunteer Instructors of the Year.
Avid ATVers, they have headed up the ATV safety classes for the Royalton area for 11 years, hosted 20 safety classes, and recruited a team of five additional safety instructors.
“It’s an honor and privilege to be able to bestow this award on the Feilers,” said Bruce Lawrence, DNR Enforcement recreational vehicle coordinator. “They are well-deserving of the award.”
Staff at the DNR’s safety education office immediately recognize their ATV safety classes as the most organized. “Without the work of volunteer instructors, educating some ATV operators would be impossible,” Lawrence said.
Minnesota law requires that anyone born after July 1, 1987, must have a certificate if they are 11 or older and want to ride on public land, trails, and frozen waters. The course also is available for adults. Minnesota has nearly 350,000 registered ATVs.
Congratulations, Scarlett and Tim!
The staff at Camp Ripley is working on updates for youth ATV safety training. At the request of a few Instructor groups, we are developing a PowerPoint which can be used for the classroom session of the youth ATV safety training. Thank you to those ATV clubs that sent in their own ATV safety PowerPoints. The optional DNR ATV classroom PowerPoint will be available in the coming months. Stay tuned.

DNR Volunteer Firearms Safety Instructor, Glenn Stream (center, holding award), was awarded for his 46 years of teaching, during a recent firearms safety class held in Rush City.
Stream has been teaching firearms safety classes since 1970. "It went by fast," he said.
Stream teaches with a group of 14 instructors who have also taught firearms safety classes for many years. The instructors have a combined 228 years of experience.
The highlight of the Rush City class is the enhanced field day where students handle and shoot 22-caliber firearms, are given an opportunity to handle and shoot shotguns, and go through the woods to learn how to safely cross fences, climb deer stands and more.
Once again, the DNR is partnering with Minnesota Outdoor News. Youth ages 11-17 who successfully complete firearms safety certification in 2016 can sign up to receive a complimentary 3-month subscription to Minnesota Outdoor News.
