Groundbreaking on Lake Vermilion!

erika rivers

On May 8, Governor Dayton, Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith, former Governor Pawlenty, Commissioner Landwehr, former Commissioner Holsten and other dignitaries joined me at the groundbreaking for the first campground at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park.

Our vision for that park is to design and build it as a model of a “next generation”  state park that explores new ideas and demonstrates best practices. For example, we have set high standards for energy efficiency and accessibility. We will also be using emerging technologies to help visitors find their way around and learn more about the park’s natural and cultural resources.

Scheduled for completion by fall of 2016, the campground at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park will accommodate more than 250 people. In addition to 28 drive-in campsites, there will be two modern group camps for tents and RVs and a semi-primitive group camp. Future phases of construction, pending funding, will include a visitor center, trail system, cabins, a group camp and nature play areas, as well as hike-in, boat-in and ATV-in campsites.

In his remarks at the groundbreaking, Governor Dayton said he had fond memories of visiting Lake Vermilion as a child, because his grandfather, George Draper Dayton, had purchased property on the other end of the lake back in 1930. He noted how appreciative he was for the work our dedicated staff is doing so that future generations can make memories at Lake Vermilion, too.

Erika and Tina Smith

Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith is about to embark on an adventure that will no doubt result in many unforgettable memories. She announced at the groundbreaking that she is planning to visit all 75 state parks and recreation areas. I personally put the first stamp in her Passport Club booklet with a brand new Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park stamp.

Special thanks to the Parks and Trails staff who planned the very successful groundbreaking event on May 8, highlights of which were captured in this short video. Thanks also to everyone who was on duty over Memorial Day weekend, working to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for our guests.
