New statewide minimum-wage rates effective Jan. 1, 2023

The new year brings new beginnings – and new statewide minimum-wage rates.

Effective Jan. 1, 2023, Minnesota's minimum-wage rates will increase from $10.33 to $10.59 an hour for large employers and from $8.42 to $8.63 an hour for other state minimum wages.

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) reminds employers of changes to the statewide minimum-wage rates and of a required minimum-wage poster that must be posted in a location where employees can easily see it.

As of Jan. 1, 2023

  • Large employers must pay at least $10.59 an hour when the employer's annual gross revenues are $500,000 or more.
  • Small employers must pay at least $8.63 an hour when the employer's annual gross revenues are less than $500,000.
  • The training wage rate, $8.63 an hour, may be paid to employees younger than 20 years of age for the first 90 consecutive days of employment.
  • The youth wage rate, $8.63 an hour, may be paid to employees younger than 18 years of age.

The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have higher minimum-wage rates, so it’s important employers and workers in those cities review those requirements. Minimum-wage rates for large employers in Minneapolis and macro employers in St. Paul will change Jan. 1, 2023.

Workplace posters available

Minnesota employers are required by law to display five workplace posters in a location where employees can easily see them.

This includes the minimum-wage poster, which is available to print or order on DLI's workplace posters page at dli.mn.gov/posters.
