Notice of change to elevator permits in Minneapolis

Dec. 23, 2020

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) will begin providing permits for elevator work in Minneapolis starting Jan. 1, 2021. Here’s what you need to know.

Contractors

  • As of Jan. 1, 2021, all elevator permits for work in Minneapolis must be applied for through DLI’s online permit system. New contractors who have not yet used this system will need to create an account and link it to their state-issued license. Fees for permits will be paid through our online system. If additional fees are due, they will be invoiced and payable to DLI.
  • If there is urgent work that needs to begin prior to Jan. 1, 2021, contact DLI’s Construction Codes and Licensing Division at 651-284-5819.

Building owners

  • Annual registrations or operating permits for 2021 will be extended to March 2021. Building owners will receive an invoice for their annual operating permits 30 days prior. An annual operating permit is a flat fee of $100 and includes related periodic inspection fees.
  • All annual registrations or operating fees must be paid to DLI.
  • If fees are still owed to Minneapolis, contact the cities information line at 311.

More information about billing for annual registrations or operating permits for elevator work in Minneapolis will be shared early next year.
